By anyone's standards today, Confucius experienced a hard life. Exiled by jealous aristocrats, Confucius set off on his own to wander the harsh land before being overwhelmed by his disciples insistence, that they join him in exile.

Confucius is credited with getting rid of an ancient Chinese practice that would see the dozens of slaves belonging to an aristocratic family slaughtered at the time of their master's death so the deceased noble man would have access to his servant's in the afterlife.

Though not formally educated, Confucius was appointed as a government adviser and during that time, orchestrated a peace deal between three rival parties with a handful of ox led buggies and farmers. It was this successful situation, that would have his government call him back out of exile 20 odd years later to assist them in the face of another great war.

Confucius has earned to right to speak of how to master our inner self in the face of adversity. You would be hard pressed to find someone who overcame more challenges in their life while remaining centered inside endless states of compassion, kindness and gratitude.
